Most people would be surprised to learn of the history of the development of HEPA filters. The same technology, which nowadays is prevalent in air purifiers, vacuums, and furnace filters, was discovered during the project developing the atomic bomb. Surprisingly enough, when Consumer Reports released their list of best rated HEPA air purifiers they weren’t completely convinced that air filtration units did any better than simple HEPA air filters which can be placed directly into furnaces. This report, however, may not have taken into account the many asthma and allergy sufferers who benefit greatly from even the minutest improvement with indoor air. Since air purifiers can be centralized to a location, such as a bedroom, as opposed to a furnace filter, which is responsible for all air flow in the house, an air purifier may be a good bet for those people with respiratory ailments. Consumer Reports, by the way, was also not too keen on bagless HEPA filter lifetime vacuums.

HEPA filters for both furnaces and stand-alone air purification systems are widely available, and since these products must pass a certain muster to be labeled HEPA a consumer can be assured that even the cheaper brands will work in an efficient manner.
